Steve nods to the fact that this show
is being saved for future use by welcoming us “on this hot, cool, rainy or
snowy night in New York.” This is, in
fact, the first show that Steve hosted by himself, originally recorded one week
after the episode in which Garry passed the torch. It shows, especially in the last segment,
when Steve struggles with the setup. The
panel is still sitting in their standard positions from the Garry Moore era.
The first
game features a batch of seven people with unusual names: Electrician “D.C. Current” and his son “A.C.
Current,” ad agency executive “Richard Burton” and his secretary “Elizabeth
Taylor,” a married couple “We’re the Angels of Paradise (Kansas)” and a man
named Thomas Thomas, who tells us, “I’m from Walla Walla.” Mr. Thomas also appeared on the show, with
the same secret, in 1957 (

).
Special guest Steve Lawrence brings
along quotes in newspapers made by members of the panel, who have to guess
which one of their fellow panelists said them.
Lawrence first gained widespread attention appearing as a singer on
Steve Allen’s original Tonight show
in 1954, usually performing with Eydie Gorme whom he married in 1957. They would continue to perform, separately
and as a pair, for decades. Here,
Lawrence is appearing in the Broadway musical What Makes Sammy Run?, which opened on February 27 and would play
until June 12, 1965.
Jim Cruikshank, Chris Shevlane, John
Cummings and Alan Gordon from Scotland: “We challenge the panel to a game of
volley ball…We’ll play the game without using our hands”
The
lads are members of the Hearts of Midlothian, a professional football (soccer)
club based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Hearts have
been playing football since 1874. Not
these four, of course.
