Four-year-old John Mangrich from Pomona, California: “I’m the new hog calling champion of Los Angeles County”
Mangrich won the title against 20 adult competitors.  In fact, the 1963 champion was an 83-year-old woman.  John’s father Joe is a hog calling competitor, and John picked up the skills watching his dad rehearse.  The Los Angeles County Fair has been operating in the early fall annually since 1922, and continues today to be one of the largest fairs in the US.

Special guest Robert Merrill finally introduces the “I’ve Got a Secret” songs the panelists were assigned to write several weeks ago ( E580 ).  Three panelists perform their songs themselves, assisted by ever-increasing numbers of background vocalists.  Merrill performs Henry Morgan’s composition, backed by the Canterbury Choral Society and their director Charles Dodsley Walker.  Walker founded the Society in 1952, and it continues to operate today, usually performing much more serious fare.  At the end, everyone sings “Happy Birthday” to Betsy.  Her birthday is November 1, the day before this long-delayed episode was recorded.
