The show is recognizing special guest
Arthur Godfrey’s 30 years of broadcasting on CBS with a salute to radio. That Is not specifically mentioned until
after the first game is played, since it would be too big a clue.
Miss X and Masters Y and Z:
“Our grandfather was the Lone Ranger on radio”
Wendy, Mark
and Bingy Beemer are wearing masks. They
are the grandchildren of Brace Beemer, the man most closely associated with the
role on radio. Beemer makes a return
appearance on the program, having appeared in 1959 (
E327
). Radio action heroes Al Hodge (“The Green Hornet”), Richard Kollmar (“Boston
Blackie”) and Bret Morrison (“The Shadow”) are also introduced. Kollmar is the husband of newspaper columnist
and What’s My Line? panelist Dorothy
Kilgallen.
Joan Bishop from Chicago, Mary Ann Anderson from Chicago and
Father Jack Lucal of New York: “We were the Quiz Kids on radio”
On Quiz Kids, young children fielded challenging questions sent in by listeners. The original series ran from 1940 until
1953 and was wildly popular. Bishop and Anderson were on the very
first episode. Anderson is the
advertising manager and creative director for Maybelline Cosmetics, Bishop is a
pianist at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City, and Lucal is a Jesuit priest.
Special guest Arthur Godfrey brings
four soap opera actresses from the past.
With Norman Paris playing their theme songs, each reads the introduction
to her show, and the panel tries to identify them. They are Anne Elstner (Stella Dallas), Vivian
Smolen (“Our Gal Sunday”), Julie Stevens (“Helen Trent”) and Adele Ronson
(“John’s Other Wife”). Stevens and Ronson had appeared in a 1957 tribute to radio (
E246
). Later, the panel
tries to identify recorded radio voices of the past. Godfrey’s anniversary will be celebrated
Saturday night with an all-night radio program over the CBS network.
