Robert L Rod from Mineola, New York: “I’m going to clean this
glass with sound waves”
Garry and Mr. Rod are drawing on a
piece of glass during the questioning. Mr.
Rod is the president of Acoustica Associates. His company is developing
cleaners that use ultrasonic waves to agitate water in order to clean
surfaces. The process was initially used
industrially due to the size and complexity of the equipment. Simple, inexpensive ultrasonic cleaners for
household use made their way onto the market in the 1970s and are still common.
Mr. X from Oxford, Michigan: “I was the original Lone Ranger on
radio”
Brace Beemer was not technically the
first, but was without question the voice most associated with the iconic
role. He played the masked man from 1941
until the series ended in 1954. The Lone Ranger originated in 1933 on
WXYZ (“the last word in radio”) in Detroit and soon became the cornerstone
program for the nascent Mutual Broadcasting System. It would later become more
closely associated with the ABC radio network. Earle Grasser played the role in
those early years, but died in an automobile accident in 1941. Beemer, who had been the show’s announcer
(“Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear!”), took over the
title role.
Beemer would make a return appearance in a 1964 episode dedicated to old-time radio (
E551
).
Special Guest David Wayne was standing
in line with the audience before the show, in disguise. He answers the panel’s questions with
snippets of conversations he taped while in line. Wayne is promoting his film The Last Angry Man (1959), which
co-stars Betsy.
