Special Guest Victor Borge is going to
sit in for a panelist, and that panelist will take over the rest of the show as
host, allowing Garry to begin his summer vacation. Garry protests that he’ll still be around all
summer with brand new episodes, not mentioning that those shows (and, in fact,
this one) have all been taped in advance.
Garry sneaks out during the blindfolded questioning, leaving Borge alone
to answer. Bill is selected to host the
remainder of the show.
Mr. X: “Henry Morgan plays me in a movie (We’ve never met)”
Burton Turkus is the former Chief of
Homicide and Chief Assistant District Attorney for Kings County, New York. In 1940, he prosecuted the notorious Murder,
Inc. gang of professional hit men, founded in the 1920s by Meyer Lansky and
Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. Turkus wrote a
1951 book about his experience in bringing down the syndicate. In the film Murders, Inc. (1960), Henry plays Turkus.
Henry Feldman from Oak Ridge, Tennessee: “I’m the U.S. Spelling
Bee Champion”
Feldman challenges the panel to a
spelling bee of their own. The
competition known today as the Scripps National Spelling Bee started in 1925 as
a consolidation of several regional bees.
The E.W. Scripps newspaper chain (then known as Scripps-Howard) began
sponsoring the event in 1941. Now a
media conglomerate that owns dozens of television stations as well as
newspapers, Scripps has continued to put on the event. At its peak of popularity, many later rounds (including
the finals) appeared on ESPN and were treated like a major sporting event. Since 2022, the competition has aired on Bounce
TV and ION, two broadcast entities co-owned by the Scripps company. (See also
