Chief White Eagle: “I have a TV in my teepee”
Confusingly, many different men took
(or were given) the “Chief White Eagle” moniker, among them an actual
indigenous leader of the 19th century, a silent film actor, a
professional wrestler and, perhaps most famously, a British-born actor and children’s
show host born Basil Heath. This particular
Chief White Eagle (real name Stanley Mylow) is a member of the Iroquois people
and lives on the Caughnawaga reserve near Montreal. The reserve is popular with tourists, and the
Chief’s “authentic” wigwam with an antenna sticking out of the top made for
good publicity. The reserve exists today
and is now more accurately known as Kahnawake.
Special guest Sarah Churchill: “I'm Garry Moore's cousin”
Churchill is
the daughter of Winston Churchill, and much like American Margaret Truman of
the same era, she tried to use the fame of her political father to advance a
show business career. She starred
opposite Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding (1951) but her acting career was otherwise undistinguished. As for the secret, as any genealogist knows,
anyone is related to anyone if you go back far enough. According to Churchill, Garry is her 10th cousin, three
times removed.
Sandra Sloss from Granite City, Missouri: “I'm the U.S. spelling champion”
Just six days earlier, the 13-year-old
Sloss won the 28th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC
by successfully spelling crustaceology. She received $500 for her efforts. After this game, she challenges the panel to
a spelling bee of their own. As an adult, Sandra Sloss Giedeman would become,
appropriately, a writer. (See also
