637     February 21, 1966 (Taped February 14)
Betsy, Arthur Godfrey, Bess, Phyllis Diller (and Henry)

Diller fills in for Henry, who is simply late getting to the studio.  This show was taped before last week’s live program, so Diller was already there standing by.  Henry shows up in time to participate in the final segment.

Mrs. Edward Petroski from Skokie, Illinois appears with her daughters Myra Sue (3), Gayle (6), Sally (9), Regina (10) and Edal (13). Edal has the main secret: “I made the dress I’m wearing” and the rest: “She made all of our clothes too”
Edal started dressing dolls at the age of seven.  She uses an 1892 pedal machine which has been updated to run electrically, but the show plans to give her a brand new electric machine to Edal’s obvious delight.  Mr. Petroski is home with the four sons.

Reverend X from Los Angeles, California: “I was the featherweight boxing champion of the world…I was also the lightweight boxing champion of the world…I was also the welterweight boxing champion of the world…All at the same time! (I’m Henry Armstrong)”
Rev. Armstrong was the first boxer to ever to hold three world championships in different weight classes at the same time, and at the time of this Secret was the only one to have done it.  Armstrong fought between 1931 and 1947, winning 151 of his 183 bouts, 100 of them by knockout.  Pound for pound, as they say in the boxing world, Armstrong is still today considered to be one of the greatest boxers who ever lived.

Special guest John Daly reads excerpts from historical newspapers and the panel tries to identify the headline event.  The stories are all found in The Story of America as Reported in its Newspapers from 1690 to 1965 (Simon & Schuster 1965).  Today, John Daly is best remembered as the host of What’s My Line? (1950-67) but his primary career was that of a newsman.  He was a longtime CBS reporter, and the first national correspondent to report on the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  From 1953 until 1960 he was vice-president of news for ABC, and the anchor of their national newscasts, all while still hosting Line? on CBS.  Daly returned to play the game again in 1967 (E675).
