“Felipe Jovem”: “A week ago, the only language I could speak was
English” and Stabanov, Francisco
Whittaker and Raul Silvera “We taught him to speak Portugese [sic] in 5
days”
“Jovem” is actually Philip Young
(‘jovem’ is ‘young’ in Portuguese), a musician studying classical guitar with
Greek teacher Sophocles Papas. Young had a scholarship opportunity in Brazil
but did not speak the language. The other four are Berlitz teachers. Maximilian Berlitz opened the first of his
language schools in Providence, Rhode Island in 1878. The company today has over 500 locations
around the globe teaching “The Berlitz Method” to thousands of language
students. Young performs a Brazilian
tune here.
Willis Frost from Redwood City, California: “I wrote my first poem
when I was 83 years old”
Frost is now 84 and has published 31
poems. He is a retired civil
engineer. His son Richard Frost is an
accomplished poet and educator. The
family is not directly related to the more famous Robert Frost.
Special guest Vivian Vance brings
along four fifth graders from Birch Lane School in Massapequa, New York who are
members of a “Think Club”. They
challenge the panel in a memory and observation game. Vance has nothing to
promote, she is simply introduced as a friend of the show.
