Songwriter Harry Ruby: “I walk 4 miles a day looking for money on
the streets…This box contains all the money I’ve found in 10 years”
Ruby and
lyricist Bert Kalmar were responsible for such standards as “Who’s Sorry Now?”
(1923) “I Wanna Be Loved by You” (1928) and “A Kiss to Build a Dream On”
(1935). They also wrote not only the
music but some of the comedy material for many of the best-known Marx Brothers
films, including Animal Crackers (1930), Horse Feathers (1932) and Duck Soup (1933). Their song “Hooray for Captain Spaulding”
(1928) became Groucho’s signature tune.
Ruby certainly doesn’t need the spare change he finds, it was simply a
hobby that became a habit. The show has
borrowed a change counter from a nearby bank to do an accounting of his
accumulated coinage.
Mary and Rick Rhoden from Roseville, Michigan: “Her letters saved
my life…I kept them in my helmet and they deflected a bullet”
Rick has
recently returned from a seven-month tour of duty in Vietnam, and his
sweetheart wrote him every day. They have
been married for ten days.
Gloria Johnson from Omaha, Nebraska: “I design all Phyllis
Diller’s clothes” and special guest Phyllis Diller: “I was just named one of
the world’s 10 worst-dressed women”
Richard Blackwell, usually known
simply as “Mr. Blackwell”, was a successful fashion designer in his own right,
but the public knew him for his annual celebration of the worst celebrity
fashion choices. Diller would be a
perennial pick (“One look at her and birds are ashamed of their feathers!”),
but since her wild look was so much a part of her stage persona, she wore the
distinction as a badge of honor. In addition to being her fashion designer,
Johnson was a friend and confidante of Diller and appeared with her on
television multiple times. Diller
referred to her as “Omar of Omaha” in her act.
In the final segment, Ruby returns to
play and sing a few of his classic tunes.
The coins and occasional paper money he found over the years total
$216.07, which he plans to donate to charity.
