Abie Grossfeld is an Olympic gymnast who performs on the parallel
bars and stands in front of a display of ribbons, awards and medals: “All these
medals were won by my wife…She’s an Olympic gymnast too”
Abie competed
in the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games and would become coach of the American men’s
gymnastics team in four additional Olympics, including the upcoming 1964 games
in Tokyo. His wife Muriel competed in
1956, 1960 and 1964. She also would turn
to coaching after retiring from international competition. Though neither earned Olympic medals, both
were highly decorated athletes at other competitions, including the
Pan-American Games. The couple would
later divorce. Muriel performs here on
the uneven bars.
Allen Teich from Skokie, Illinois is wearing one of six suits his
boss gave him: “He gave me a suit every time I lost 50 pounds…I lost 324 pounds
in 18 months”
Teich started
at 525 pounds and now weighs 199. He
credits the TOPS (“Take Off Pounds Sensibly”) support group for helping him
lose the weight. Rather than promoting
specific diet plans, TOPS focuses on health, behavior (Teich gave up between
meal snacks) and overall wellness. TOPS
was founded in 1948 and today claims almost 200,000 members in thousands of
chapters throughout the US and Canada.
Special guest
Sam Levenson, who last year at this time (
E531
) gave the panel a sixth-grade
general knowledge test, returns to quiz them again, but this time with
fifth-grade material. They still
struggle.
