Bill, Betsy, Henry, Dorothy Collins

Collins is a singer best known as one of the vocalists on the television series Your Hit Parade (1950-1959).  Bess is in Pasadena covering the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Nancy Wendler is wearing modified ski boots, with which: “I’m going to stand on the ceiling”
Inventor John F Heard from the aerospace division of Martin Marietta comes out to describe Velcro, which had only been introduced commercially a few years ago and was still unfamiliar to the general public.  Heard did not invent the fastener, but was using it in the design for his shoes, which were being developed with the space program in mind.  Velcro fasteners would eventually be used on suits and other equipment in all Apollo moon missions.  Swiss engineer George De Mestral patented Velcro in 1955 after a decade of development.  He coined the term by combining French words for “velvet” and “hook”.

William Hatfield from Hampden, West Virginia and his dog Brownie: “My dog was trapped in an abandoned coal mine…I dug for 31 days to get him out”
Brownie actually spent 50 days trapped in the mine.  Hatfield didn’t discover him for eighteen days.  Ultimately, as word spread about the young man digging nightly for his dog, it turned into a community project and a bulldozer was brought in to speed up the digging.  As the story became a national one, gifts and encouragements rolled in.  For its part, the show gave Brownie his own $80 in prize money, effectively doubling Hatfield’s winnings.  Oddly, though the show refers to the guest as “William” or “Bill” throughout, all contemporary newspaper reporting says his name is Richard.
