The second of two shows from Hollywood, where Garry is also doing his variety show.
Mr X from New Jersey: “I’ll be wearing a
different costume for each answer I give”
Owen McGiveney Jr is a quick-change
artist who, with the help of backstage dressers, is able to change outfits in a
matter of seconds. His father was a
“changer” in vaudeville, and he worked to keep the very specific tradition
alive. Owen Jr would later bill himself
as Michael McGiveney. In 1980 he would
star on Broadway in a one-man show called Quick
Change, which only lasted five performances.
Mr. X: “In the past 7 years I’ve had 14,000
pies…thrown in my face”
Soupy Sales
is not yet famous enough to be recognized by the panel, even though at this
point, his daytime children’s show is seen nationwide on ABC. Though his national program only lasted a
year and a half, different incarnations of his show appeared locally in
Detroit, Los Angeles and New York at various times between 1953 and 1966. His slapstick humor and silly jokes appealed
to adults as well as children, earning him a cult following. He would later be a regular panelist on the
syndicated version of What’s My Line? (1968-1975). Soupy even takes a few pies to the face here.
Special Guest Ronald Reagan gives
Henry and Steve radio announcer tests, while facing various distractions. Louis Nye shows ups to distract Steve during
his test. During Henry’s test, Betsy and
Bess attempt to trip him up.
