418     February 1, 1961 (Taped January 31)
Steve Allen, Betsy, Henry, Bess

The show originates from Hollywood (as does Garry's variety show for the next two weeks), and had been taped the day before.

[Herbert Docter] from Hollywood: “I served Henry Morgan breakfast in bed this morning”
[Nick Nitty] from Los Angeles: “I served Bess Myerson breakfast in bed this morning”
[Irwin Zucker] from Hollywood: “I served Betsy Palmer breakfast in bed this morning”
Jayne Meadows from Los Angeles: “I served Steve Allen breakfast in bed this morning”
The three men work at the various hotels where the panelist are staying, and originally come out as a trio.  Garry mentions that there must be a fourth part to the Secret, and Jayne enters to complete the quartet.

[Sheryl Henry] from Los Angeles: “My grandmother plays the trombone in an all-girl jazz band”
“The Swinging Mothers” is the name of the 12-piece group of women ranging in age from 40 to 64.  They had previously made appearances on Steve Allen’s Tonight Show.  Sheryl’s grandmother is Fern Jaros.  Jaros began her career as a musician at age nine and would perform for more than eighty years.  The Swinging Mothers perform “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.”

Special Guest Spike Jones: “Garry Moore is going to sing a song…and I’ll lead the panel in background music”
Jones’ twisted takes on popular standards and classical songs, using odd musical instruments and other unusual sounds, fell somewhere between novelty recordings and avant garde, experimental music.  Wildly popular in the 40s and 50s, he is nearing the end of his career here. In typical fashion, the “background music” supplied by the panelists is a variety of grunts, squeaks, and other weird noises.
