Bill, Betsy, Johnny Carson, Bess
Garry the Weatherman: “A glad good
evening to you on a rather coolish evening here in August.”
This is the first live show after several
weeks of original but pre-taped programs.
Henry is still out doing summer stock, and Bess has a tan so dark you
can see it on the black and white kinescope.
Landon Bradshaw from Brookland, Texas has a large box on stage
which contains: “A watermelon…It weighs 119 pounds.”
It’s a big
watermelon.
Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Vernon from Lebanon, Missouri, plus sons Bill,
Bob, Don and BJ (all ministers), their wives Joy, Pat, Carol and Lorraine and
their seven children: “All of us star in our own TV program”
The Vernons
produce Homestead U.S.A., a
syndicated series of half-hour religious films featuring the family at
home. The four brothers perform as a
quartet, sometimes joined by their wives.
The Vernons even made some records.
The endeavor would not last long, but today is considered a pioneering
effort in Christian broadcasting. The
entire family, including the children, performs here, accompanied by Norman
Paris.
Special guest Alan King challenges the
panelists to find whether men or women can pack the trunk of a car better. King’s gentle (though sometimes mock-angry)
jibes at everyday American life and simple men vs. women observations were the
source of his humor for many years as a nightclub comic. He would also appear in some two dozen films,
and make countless television appearances on variety and talk programs.
