The show originates from Winter Haven,
Florida at the outdoor Lake Silver Amphitheatre which seats 4,000 people. Both Garry’s daytime program and I’ve Got
a Secret are guests of the Florida Citrus Exposition and its president,
W.F. Lawless, who is recognized in the audience. Bill stayed in New York to attend to his other responsibilities (most notably The Price Is Right, which was just three months old at this point, as well as
a daily NYC radio program), so Durward Kirby from the morning show fills in on the panel.
Mrs. Robert Eaton, a housewife: “My father is
the Governor…of California”
The former Miss Marilyn Knight is the
daughter of Goodwin Knight, who served as governor of California from 1953
until 1959. After the Secret, Florida
Governor LeRoy Collins’ daughter Mary Call appears, and the two women exchange
gifts.
Mrs. Murray Jones from Deland, Florida: “I
grew the biggest lemon in the world”
Garry can barely hold it in his
hand. It is a big lemon.
Special Guest Rocky Graziano: “I’m choosing
the 1957 Florida Citrus Queen”
A beauty pageant takes place right
under the panelists’ blindfolded noses. Graziano
is one of six judges. The winner, Frances
Layton, is crowned by Garry on the live show.
Layton would relinquish her crown in June to marry Dick Pope Jr., the
son of the founder of Cypress Gardens.
Cypress Gardens was once a Winter Haven tourist attraction. The Legoland Florida Resort is now located
where the former attraction once stood.
At the end of the program, Garry leads
the panelists, the beauty queens, the judges and the 100 members of the Winter
Haven High School Marching Band on a march down to the shore of Lake Silver and
off into the distance.
