This unusual show opens with Garry,
Henry and Bill performing “Mutual Admiration Society” (adapted with new lyrics)
from the 1956 Broadway musical Happy
Hunting.
The set is filled with the items sent
to “Good Old Bill” following Art Linkletter’s segment the previous week. Garry says more than 148,000 pieces of mail
have been received. Virtually the entire
episode is spent with the guys clowning around and looking through the stuff. Two guests, a Kansas man and his young
daughter, tell Garry that the girl sent in the key to the family’s hall closet,
where their Christmas gifts are stored.
In the final segment, Garry salutes the
men and women of the postal service, dozens of whom are in the audience. NYC Postmaster Robert Schaffer shows up to
present Bill with letters that were delivered “postage due” to the tune of
about thirty dollars. Postmaster
Schaffer encourages the audience to get their Christmas cards and letters out
as soon as possible. Several dozen
postal workers who make up a “Post Office Chorus” perform a couple of Christmas
carols.
