John Upton of
Massachusetts: “I directed the rescue of a whole family from a recent flood”
Hurricane Diane slammed into the East Coast
last week, causing torrential rains and heavy flooding all over New
England. This in the wake of another
substantial storm a week earlier.
Connecticut was hardest hit but most of New England suffered. Upton was part of a helicopter rescue team
involved in a daring incident in Massachusetts.
Two infants were too small to wear the harness dropped by rescue
helicopters. Upton descended from the
helicopter wearing the harness and took the two small children up by hand. Nationwide, Diane caused nearly 200 deaths
and was the first hurricane to cause more than a billion dollars worth of
property damage (over $10 billion in today’s dollars). The name has since been retired from use by
the World Meteorological Association.
[Agnes Donahue]:
“I was diapered by Don McNeill as a baby”
Special Guest
Boris Karloff: “I am sitting on 250,000 volts of electricity”
Another opportunity for Karloff to
play the good sport in yet another bit inspired by his role as the monster in Frankenstein (1931).
Fletcher Reynolds
of Cleveland: “I just brought back from Africa 3 elephants…2 giraffes…2
rhinos…2 hippos…2 baboons…and a cheetah for local zoos”
Reynolds is the director of the
Cleveland Zoo, where most of these animals will end up. The menagerie, which arrived in New York from
East Africa just days ago, was at the time the largest group of wild animals
every gathered in a single safari, and the largest single shipment of wild
animals into captivity. Reynolds would
return to the show in 1957. [
