William DuBose from Fremont, Ohio: “I’m going
to throw steak knives…at my mother-in-law!”

Ira Barricini from New York City: “I gave away
half a million lollipops”
When the Salk polio vaccine became
widely available to children in the mid-fifties, lollipops were the popular
enticement to get the kiddies to get their shots. The treats were usually donated by candy
manufacturers, and in the greater New York area, none were more generous than
the Barricini company. Barricini Candies
started out as a chocolate company in 1928 and eventually expanded to include
dozens of popular locations throughout the Northeast and beyond. In 1971, the company would be acquired by
rival Loft’s Candies, the first in a series of ownership and management changes
that would result in all Barricini and Loft’s stores being closed by 1988.
Special Guest Spike Jones conducts the panel
in a performance of “Cocktails for Two”
“Cocktails for Two” (1934) was a popular Big Band
standard most often associated with Duke Ellington. The comedic version released in 1944 by Spike
Jones and His City Slickers included wacky sound effects amidst the earnest lyrics. It became the City Slickers’ biggest hit. Today, to the degree the song is remembered
at all, it is usually the Spike Jones novelty version that is recalled. Here, the panel supplies the sound effects.
