John Horrigan of Washington DC: “I brought 100
babies across the ocean”
Garry explains that Mr. Horrigan was a
commander in the US Navy during WWII who brought over the first English “war
brides” (women who married US military personnel serving overseas) along with
their infant children.
Mr. X: “I once fired Henry Morgan”
Sam Zither packaged an early 1930s
radio show called Flufferettes (named after its sponsor Marshmallow Fluff)
which aired on 21 stations that made up the Yankee Network. Marshmallow Fluff was one of the earliest
products sponsored on radio. Henry was
one of his early announcers but was too comic when they wanted a serious voice,
so he was let go.
Special Guest Jan Murray: “I used to have long
golden curls”
Murray made a name for himself as a
Borscht Belt comic before becoming an above-the-title star of game shows (Jan Murray’s Treasure Hunt) in the 50s
and early 60s. One such game, Charge Account, eventually became known
simply as The Jan Murray Show. He continued to appear as a guest on
celebrity game shows through the 1980s, making hundreds of appearances on The Hollywood Squares, for example. He also acted occasionally, most often as a
TV guest star in dramas as well as comedies.
[Richard Woodhull] of Summit, NJ: “I have two
squirrels in my sleeve”
Sure enough, he did. One escaped into the studio audience, and
Garry quite earnestly encouraged everyone to keep their seats until it could be
located.
