Garry the Weatherman: “Many warm welcomes to you on a very cold
night in New York City.”
Nicholas Lind of NYC: “I cut Garry Moore’s
hair.”
Gary was so famous for his crew style
that he earned the nickname “The Haircut.” In his 1958-1967 variety show, one
of the images in the animated opening sequence was a man taking a lawn mower to
the top of his head. Presumably, Mr.
Lind used more traditional apparatuses. Lind
worked at DeZemler’s Barber Shop in the RCA building (the iconic skyscraper
commonly known as 30 Rock), which Garry plugs until pretending to be horrified
that he was mentioning NBC property.
Miss Patricia Bergen: “I live on Alcatraz”
Today a tourist attraction, Alcatraz
was most famously home to a high-security Federal penitentiary from 1934 to
1963. Miss Bergen explains that
her father is captain of the guards there.
Philip Bergen served on the island from 1939 until 1955 and co-wrote a
book about an attempted escape in 1946.
Tourists to the island today hear his voice telling stories of the
notorious prison.
Special Guest Dick Haymes: “I’m sitting on
Bill Cullen’s hat.”
This is very much a Secret of the
period. Men wore nice hats. Bill’s hat is crushed, and Garry explains
that for the sake of the gag, the producers planned to buy him a new one. Haymes was a recording artist and popular radio
vocalist of the 1940s who also appeared as an actor in movies and
television. He married a total of six
times. Four of his wives were actresses,
among them screen legend Rita Hayworth.
Without enough time to play even an
abbreviated fourth game, Garry talks briefly with Henry about his local,
late-night NYC radio program.
