39   Recorded March 15, 1973

Pat Carroll, Gene Rayburn, Anita Gillette, Richard Dawson

Gene gets Steve to promote his upcoming book Curses! (Hawthorn 1973) a collection of colorful curses from around the world and the meanings behind them.

Wolfgang Bayer, a wildlife filmmaker: “I took movies of the panelists with a hidden camera”

Bayer is a producer of television nature programs.  His best-known work is probably the television series Animal World (1968-1972) starring Bill Burrud, which aired on all three networks and eventually in syndication.  Here, Bayer captured Pat leading a school field trip to a firehouse, Anita taking tennis lessons, and Richard with his son jumping on a trampoline in his backyard.

Twelve-year-old Joy Maranville from Bolton Landing, New York: “I was fishing…and hooked a whale!”

This happened about a year ago on a family trip to New Zealand to see relatives.  Joy was with her father and uncle in a 12-foot dinghy when she hooked a 35-foot blue whale that leaped out of the water just a few feet away from their boat.  Not taking any chances, they cut the line and rowed to safety.

Special guest Chad Everett will communicate with a talking computer 3000 miles away.

The computer is in the Bell Labs Complex in Holmdel, New Jersey.  Anita helps with the demonstration and “talks” with the computer using a touch-tone telephone, still something of a novelty in 1973.  The goal is to use such a computer to teach children to read, though at this early juncture in computer technology the "lesson" is simplistic and little more than a stunt.   Everett’s TV series Medical Center (1969-1976) is in the middle of its seven-season run.  Steve’s wife Jayne Meadows has an occasional supporting role on the show as Nurse Chambers.
