Abraham Shipe Jr rents a mode of transportation to
customers by the day, or by the hour: ”My vehicle is a World War II Army tank”
Shipe got his 1943 tank from an MGM surplus auction a few
months earlier. The studio had purchased
the decommissioned vehicle from the army and had featured it in the TV series The
Rat Patrol (1966-68). According to a
1980 profile, Shipe’s celebrity customers included Carol Burnett, Merv Griffin,
Cher and even Steve Allen himself. The
tank is in the studio, but not in the usual spot behind the Great Wall due to
the weight problem. In his memoir Would You Believe! (2017), production
manager Andrew J Selig tells of having to reinforce the floor of the studio
just to get the tank inside the doors.
Mr X from Culver City, Mr Y from Manhattan Beach and Mr Z
from North Hollywood: “Our real names are Mr Ex, Mr Wye and Mr Zee”
The original series played this same stunt with three men in
1964 (

). These do not appear to be
the same three men, at least not all of them.
Special guest Marty Allen models ridiculous wigs for the
studio audience while the blindfolded panel asks their questions
Marty Allen gained fame working with partner Steve Rossi on
film, stage and television from 1957 until an amicable split in 1968. As a team, they made hundreds of TV
appearances and recorded 16 comedy albums.
While Rossi (a straight-man and singer) continued to perform with other
comedy partners, Allen spent more of his later career as a solo act. Both would find success separately and would
even reunite occasionally for special events.
In addition to nightclub work and the occasional serious acting role, Allen
would become a ubiquitous presence on game and talk shows in the 70s and 80s.
