Albert Nicholas from St Petersburg, Florida:
“I invented motorized roller skates”
Nicholas says his souped-up
gas-powered wheels can do up to 50mph, and his goal was to create a competitive
spectator sport. While he claims to
have invented the system, there are references to working models as far back as
the 1920s, and Hugh O’Brien demonstrated a similar propulsion system (with less
power) in a 1959 episode (
E357
).
Nicholas was a lifelong tinkerer and inventor (in the eighties he would
work on rocket powered skates) but he never got rich from his schemes,
and his biggest success was the notoriety he received from getting booked on
shows like this.
Augustine Bucher of St Paul, Minnesota: “I
started college 57 years ago…I just graduated!”
Mrs. Bucher is 82 years old and began
attending the University of Minnesota in 1909.
She left after two years to become a teacher and housewife. She returned to the university in 1951,
determined to complete a four-year Bachelor of Arts program but in no real
hurry to do so. She took one night school class
every semester for fifteen years until finally completing her degree.
Special Guest Gretchen Wyler: “Henry and I are
going to entertain US troops in Greenland…and he doesn’t know!”
By the time this pre-recorded episode aired, Henry and Wyler had already returned from their quick journey, which included performances at the Thule Air Base in northern Greenland and the Sondrestrom Air Base in southern Greenland. Today, Thule is part of the United States Space Force. Sondrestrom is no longer a military base. It is now home to Kangerlussuaq, one of only two civilian airports on the enormous island.
