The music of the Salvation Army band alerts us to another Christmas edition of I’ve Got a Secret.  However, this year the Salvation Army band is relegated to only brief appearances at the beginning and end of the show.

Spurgeon Sigley, Dr. Richmond Myers and 18 additional members of the Central Moravian Church Choir of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania: “We don’t sing…we are the world’s only all-trombone choir”
The Central Moravian Choir was founded in 1754, when Pennsylvania was still a colony, and claims to be the oldest continuing musical organization in the United States.  The choir remains active today.  Moravia is a region of central Europe occupied today by the Czech Republic.  Here, the choir performs a traditional Moravian hymn, followed by “Adeste Fidelis” (1744).

Carole Reinhart from New York City has traveled the world and earned various honors, scholarships and awards: “I’m a trumpet player”   Only 24 here, Reinhart has already been honored multiple ways.  She earned a scholarship to Julliard as well as a Fulbright Scholarship, and is the first woman to be recognized as a bandleader for the Salvation Army.  She would go on to have a successful career as a performer, recording artist and educator, primarily in Europe.  Here, she performs “La Virgen de la Macarena,” a traditional bullfighting song made famous in the US by Rafael Mendez in the early 1950s.  Later generations would recognize it as the theme music of comedian Don Rickles.

John Trotter from Alexandria, Virginia: “I’m a ‘chorus girl’ in a college musical”
Trotter is a performer with Princeton’s Triangle Club.  Since 1891, Triangle has put on an original musical comedy each year, usually a spoof, which is performed on the Princeton campus and later taken on a brief national tour. Their signature tradition is a kickline, for decades performed by male students in drag.  Princeton would not become coeducational until 1969, though the Triangle Club opened its ranks to women a year earlier.  Notable Triangle alumni include Jimmy Stewart, Jose Ferrer, Brooke Shields and Ellie Kemper.  Trotter and some friends perform a selection from their current show, High Sobriety (1965).  The Triangle Club remains active today and is considered one of the oldest college clubs of its kind in the US.
