Betsy, Bill, Bess, Henry
Mr and Mrs Anthony Gongola from McMechen, West Virginia were
honored by the Boosters Club of the Benwood Union High School football program:
“One or more of our sons has played on the team…every year for the past 23
years”
The Gongolas
had twelve sons who all played football for Benwood Union, going all the way
back to 1943. Most of them played
baseball and basketball as well. In all
those years, mom only saw one game (the last one) and dad only two. All the sons are on hand to be recognized.
Special guest Debbie Bryant, Miss America 1966, is using some of
her earnings for a special reason: “I’m helping to put my mother through
college”
Bryant won
her crown on September 11, in the pageant televised by CBS. It was the first Miss America Pageant to be broadcast
in color. Mom is studying education. Here, Bryant says that after her year of
responsibilities, she is planning to go into pre-med and become a
pediatrician. She instead would earn a
bachelor’s degree in English.
Musical Director Norman Paris: “I’m not playing the organ…this
music is coming from a guitar”
Paris appears
to be playing the organ, but after the panel is blindfolded, the curtain comes
up and we see [Frank Cherchev] playing a Vox Guitar Organ imported from England. The innovative design of the instrument
featured miniaturized organ circuitry which makes tones when the strings make
contact with the frets. Designer Dick
Denney demonstrates other features of the instrument. While the guitar organ did not make a lasting
impact on the industry, the Vox company became famous for their line of
electric musical instruments and, especially, their guitar amplifiers, which
were used by such iconic British bands as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and
The Kinks.
