Floyd Rood from New Orleans, Louisiana spent 340 days on a
cross-country trip: “I hit a golf ball every inch of the way (96,368 strokes)”
Rood started his adventure in Santa
Barbara on September 15, 1963 and ended in Miami on October 4, 1964. He says he lost 2,559 golf balls during his
trip. (Various news reports offer
different specifics.) The purpose of his
stunt was to raise awareness and money for his Floyd Rood Youth in Sports
Foundation for delinquent boys. His
passion outside golf was the fight against crime and narcotics. Rood would continue to make headlines for his
stunts, earning him the nickname “World’s Nuttiest Golfer.” In 1978, he would attempt to drive a golf
ball over the New Orleans Superdome roof.

Special guest Shirl Conway brings out
random members of the studio audience, and the panel, based on little more than
appearance and intuition, tries to figure out details about them. A stage veteran, Conway is starring in the
CBS drama The Nurses (1962-1965). Though she earned an Emmy
nomination for her role, she would have few other television credits. In the 70s, she would move to Washington
state and start a community theatre there.
