Dr. Jim Brown, Dr. Charles Lockhart and Dr. Don Gose, all from
Springfield, Missouri: “We have raised $70,000 at banquets and medial
conventions…by singing”
The three physicians are part of a
group of six doctors who perform a musical comedy act to raise money for
medical scholarships. Along with Drs.
Hal Lurie, F.T. H’Doubler and Fred Coller, the “Singing Doctors” raise the bulk
of their money with the sales of record albums.
They would later be joined by Jim Cook, one of the first recipients of a
Singing Doctors scholarship. Founded in
1958, the group would perform for decades and would ultimately raise more than
$400,000 with their efforts. Today,
their legacy is the Singing Doctors of Springfield Medical Scholarship Fund at
the University of Missouri.
Special guest Bud Collyer brings with
him the To Tell the Truth panel (Tom
Poston, Peggy Cass, Orson Bean and Kitty Carlisle) in order to promote next
week’s crossover episode, in which the two panels appear on each other’s shows. To promote the stunt, they play an odd hybrid
of both games. First, three men all claiming
to be Patrick J. McKenna have a Secret: “I was on a diet and lost 120 pounds…I
didn’t eat a bit of food for 4 months.”
After the Secret panelists
successfully identify the Secret, the Truth panelists take over and try to figure out which one is the real Patrick
McKenna. McKenna, an Oklahoma City
newsman, went from 399 to 279 pounds on a liquid diet under strict supervision.
