celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary tonight”
The nine
contestants are all brothers and sisters in the same family, and range in age
from 54 to 73. Their parents, Everett
and Perlina, are each 95 years old.
Everett performs “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers” (1879) on a violin he made
himself. Perlina is revealed to be a
card player, who particularly enjoys penny ante poker.
Harvey Jones from Detroit: “I’m Cassius Clay’s
sparring partner” and Jesse Bowdry from St Louis: “I’m Sonny Liston’s sparring
partner”
The highly
anticipated title bout between the two heavyweight boxers would take place the
next night. Clay, a huge underdog, would
win the fight in the seventh round when Liston declined to continue. The bout, and the May 1965 rematch which Clay
(by that time known as Muhammad Ali) won by a first round knockout, remain two of the
most famous and most controversial fights in the sport’s history. Here, Garry reads a long poem written by Clay
about the upcoming fight, as well as a brief statement from Liston.
Special guest Morey Amsterdam had the
panel memorize a list of fifty jokes earlier in the week, and tests them on
their recall of the jokes when prompted by a subject. As always when Amsterdam comes to visit, this
is a play on his well-publicized ability to come up with a joke on any topic on
the spot.
