3-year-old Gordon Hawthorne from Troy, Pennsylvania: “I fell into
a pond,” his 5-year-old brother Hugh: “I
jumped in to save him,” and their German Shepherd Dutch: “I rescued both of
them”
The harrowing event took place last
October 31. In August, Dutch was
recognized as Dog Hero of the Year by the Ken-L Ration dog food brand.
Ray Stits from Riverside, California is in front of a large box
which contains: “The world’s smallest airplane”
Called “Sky
Baby,” Stits and colleague Robert Starr built the plane in the mid-50s
specifically to set the diminutive record.
The tiny biplane has a wingspan of 7’2” and is 9’10” long. It flew for only 25 total hours before Stits
donated it to the Smithsonian. Sky Baby would
hold the record for smallest airplane until 1984, when Starr would create an
even smaller one called the Bumble Bee.
Special guest James Garner challenges
the panel with simple English words and phrases that have been translated
phonetically into other languages. Less
confusing than it sounds. Garner is
appearing in the film The Wheeler Dealers (1963) and is on his way to London to shoot The Americanization of Emily (1964). Garner would later call Emily his favorite of his own films.
