Garry opens the new season with candid
photographs taken of the panel over the summer without their knowledge. Garry also makes note of Bill’s The Price Is Right changing networks
(from NBC to ABC, though that’s not explicitly stated) and that Henry is
starring in the play The King of Hearts at
the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. X: “My husband was rescued from the Hazleton mine”
Anna Fellin
is the wife of David Fellin, one of three miners trapped in a Pennsylvania cave-in
on August 13. Rescuers made contact with
Fellin and Henry Throne after five days, but it took a total of two weeks to
finally rescue them. Breathless newspaper accounts chronicled the rescue
efforts over the fourteen days. Mr.
Fallin comes out after the game, to sustained applause. A grim postscript (not mentioned on the show)
is that the third man, who had been trapped separately from the other two, was
never located. Historically, the event is referred to today as the Sheppton
mine disaster and rescue, named after a smaller nearby town.
Special guest Phil Silvers brings with him four notable sports
personalities: Former world lightweight
and welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross, Rod Kanehl of the New York Mets, two-time
Olympic decathlon gold medalist Bob Mathias and golf legend Sam Snead. All five share a secret: “We’re going to make
our debut as a Dixieland band”
With Silvers on clarinet, Ross on
piano, Mathias on guitar, Sneed on trumpet, Kanehl on harmonica and Garry on
drums, the group performs “Darktown Strutter’s Ball” (1917). Not well, but with enthusiasm. Silvers
will join Garry and other CBS stars for a season premiere TV special on September
23.
