George Van Daniker from Baltimore, Maryland: “I was in an amateur
contest with Garry 27 years ago…I won”
Garry
explains that in those old Baltimore days, hopefuls trying to break into the
business would perform at various amateur nights hoping to get noticed. Garry tells a few corny jokes he used in his
early days. Van Daniker, no longer an
aspiring professional singer, sings part of “Roses of Picardy” (1616). This was the song he sang the night he beat
Garry, and he steals the show tonight as well.
Special guest Alan King and the panel
play around with “Tom Swifties,” short flowery phrases with a comic twist.
(“That’s a big hole,” he said, gravely.)
The panel reads some they came up with over the weekend (Bill: “That’s
not a bull,” he uttered) and later tries to finish incomplete ones. King continues his upward career arc with
frequent appearances on popular variety series, including The Garry Moore Show.
Miss Sue Day from Long Island: “I’m their cooking teacher” and the
seven young men from Long Island she’s referring to: “We’ve cooked dinner for
the panel”
At an elegant table, the students
serve the panel such delicacies as shrimp scampi and filet of sole.
