The first show in the new earlier time slot of 8pm Eastern also
features a new logo, which the show would use for the remainder of the
run. “I’VE GOT A” appears in large black
block letters, as the small word “SECRET” flashes inside the “A”. Also, announcer John Cannon begins making a
point of saying when the show is live. At the
later time slot, they often recorded the show earlier in the evening.
May Meuser from Bayside, Rita Hughes from The Bronx and Pat
Brennan from Astoria: “These are our husband’s work clothes…Our husbands are
New York City Policemen”
The clothes
are women’s fashions displayed on dummies.
The men are members of the Tactical Patrol Force dressing undercover as
women for Operation Decoy, a program aimed at catching would-be muggers and
robbers. New York’s operation was based
on a similar plan set up earlier in St Louis.
It would be considered a success, netting dozens of arrests in the first
weeks of the campaign.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Armstrong from Wapakoneta, Ohio: “Our son
became an astronaut today”
Neil Armstrong was part of the second
batch of astronauts selected by NASA.
Known as the “New Nine”, they also included Frank Borman, Pete Conrad,
Jim Lovell and John Young. Armstrong was
a civilian test pilot, and would be the first civilian astronaut in space when
he commanded Gemini 8 in March, 1966. In
an astonishingly prescient moment, Garry asks Mrs. Armstrong, “How would you
feel…if it turns out that your son is the first man to land on the moon?” As part of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong
would do just that on July 20, 1969.
Special guest Paul Anka improvises
songs based on people and objects from the studio audience then has the panel
attempt to do the same. Anka appears in
a small role in The Longest Day (1962) and composed its theme song.
