Mr. X from Houston, Texas: “I won the Indianapolis 500 mile race
last week” and Mr. Y from Anderson, Indiana: “I won the first Indianapolis race
50 years ago”
A.J. Foyt and Ray Harroun today are
both inducted in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame. Harroun’s original win in 1911 was the first
500 mile auto race of any sort, considered then to be a grueling marathon. His average speed was just under 75mph. This was the first of what would be four Indy
500 wins for Foyt in his legendary career, which also would include winning
NASCAR’s Daytona 500 in 1972.
Special Guest Charley Weaver brings
four different Secrets, one for each of the panelists, and has them compete to
see which can discover theirs first. The Secrets are:
“Charley took Bill’s wife to dinner tonight” (Ann appears briefly
at the end of the program)
“Charley is wearing Betsy’s hat under his own”
“Charley will serve Henry with a subpoena”
“Charley has Bess’s paycheck in his pocket”
Charley
Weaver is a fictional character, a creation of actor Cliff Arquette. Arquette debuted the character on radio, but
it was his folksy television appearances, especially on Jack Paar’s Tonight show, that made him famous. Arquette rarely appeared in public as anyone
but Charley Weaver, and the character became a bit of an industry, with toys,
books and records to his name. In his
later years he would become a regular on The
Hollywood Squares (1966-1981) until his death in 1974. A generation of acting Arquettes that includes Rosanna, Patricia, Alexis and David are his grandchildren.
