Wayne Koons from Lyons, Kansas and George Cox from Eustis,
Florida: “We’re the helicopter pilots who picked up Astronaut Shepard”
On May 5, Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7 became the first American in
space. The flight was originally scheduled for April of 1960, but various delays
in launching the mission allowed Russia’s Yuri Gagarin to beat him to space by
a few weeks. His entire flight only
lasted about fifteen minutes, blastoff to splashdown, but the successful launch
and recovery became a source of American pride.
Koons and Cox are Marine lieutenants.
Special Guest Donald O’Connor tests
the panel’s memory, seeing if they can recall the questions they asked during
the game.
A recording of the game is
replayed, and the panel (as well as Garry and O’Connor) try to lip-synch to
their original dialogue. O’Connor is promoting The Wonders of Aladdin (1961), in which he plays the title
character.
In the final segment, Henry is
presented with his 1925 Model T automobile, his successful trade for the horse
from the past two shows.
