Durward Kirby, Carol Burnett, Henry, Bess

Betsy Palmer hosts

The set has been decorated in flowers for a feminine touch.  Norman Paris on the accordion provides the music, backed by a female trio on piano, harp and bass.  Kirby and Burnett are regulars on Garry’s variety show.  Burnett is also currently on Broadway in the musical Once Upon a Mattress (1959-60).   The future television legend would make several appearances on Secret as either a panelist or special guest

Hallbjorg Nielsen from Reykjavik, Iceland: “I have a soprano singing voice…I also sing tenor and baritone…I also sing bass”
Mrs. Nielsen is new to the states, and uses her husband’s Danish surname rather than her own Icelandic name Bjarnadottir.  After warming up as a soprano, she performs “Old Man River” and Ain’t Misbehavin’” in a very low register.

Four women with what are typically considered male occupations all model dresses.
They are Miss [May Grayson] (a bartender), Miss [Loretta Rudney] (a private investigator for Pinkerton Detective Agency), Mrs. [Margaret Allen] (a barber) and Miss [Rona Levine] (a doorman)

Mrs. Edna McEwen from Phoenix, Arizona: “My home town voted me Man of the Year”
Mrs. McEwen’s home town is the recently-annexed Phoenix suburb of Sunnyslope, and McEwen herself is recently elected to the Phoenix City Council, the only woman in that body.  She would remain active in local politics and civic work all her life.

Special Guest Jean-Pierre Aumont wants to prove than men are better designers of women’s fashions than women themselves, so he has Henry and Kirby design dresses for Bess and Carol. Aumont is in New York to begin rehearsals for the Broadway play Betsy calls The Other One.  It would debut on April 13 with the title A Second String (1960) and would play for 29 performances before closing on May 7.
