Commander Larry Flint from the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent
River, Maryland: “Two weeks ago...I set a new world’s jet plane altitude record
(19 miles up)” and Captain Joe B. Jordan from Edwards Air Force Base in
California: “Last week I broke his record”
Aviation
records were being set and broken at a frantic pace in the fifties and sixties
as America worked to improve its national defense and position itself against
the Soviet Union in the space race.
Flint, in fact, broke a record previously held by the Russians, which
Garry points out with American pride. Both
received the Distinguished Flying Cross for their accomplishments. Flint had been scheduled to appear on the
show solo the previous week, before Jordan’s record-breaking effort.
Ten contestants: “Our last names are Wee, Wish, Yu, Alla, Merry,
Christmas, Ande, Happy, New, Years”
The
contestants hold cards that spell out the Christmas wish. All of them were found in the New York area,
except Mr. Years from Philadelphia.
This is another example of a popular Secret the staff would return to
on other occasions, the latter examples as songs. (See also

Special Guest Elsa Maxwell brings on a
wagon full of toys for the panel to play with, including stilts and pogo sticks. Special attention is paid to a new toy called
a Hula Board, basically just a short, warped piece of wood you stand on and
swivel your body to move. Even Miss
Maxwell gives it a try. The Hula Board
would become one of the early failures of the Wham-O company, which gave the
world the Hula Hoop (See

) and the Frisbee.
