Jack Chambers from Los Angeles: “I memorized all the news in today’s
New York Herald Tribune”
Chambers puts his unusual skills to
the test every day on a local Los Angeles quiz show called Check It With Chambers (1959-1960), in which callers try to stump
him with questions from that day’s Los Angeles Times. The panel tries to stump
him here, even asking him to identify specific clues in the crossword puzzle,
but he prevails every time.
Special Guest Ben Gazzara will appear as
a boxer next Monday (September 28) in a TV remake of the 1947 film Body and Soul. With the panel blindfolded, he puts Garry
through his training regimen. Oddly, baseball's Whitey Ford comes out to do a little light sparring with Gazarra. Later, boxing
legend Joe Louis appears in the segment for an interview. Only 30 here, Gazzara is primarily known as a
stage actor at this point but would go on to have a prolific career in TV and films,
first as a tough guy but ultimately in a wide variety of roles.
In the final segment, the panel wishes
Garry good luck on the second season of his variety show, set to debut on
September 29. They present him with an
enormous three-layer cake, out of which pops Marion Lorne, a regular on his
show.
