Retha Buell and Jan Robin: “We are mother and daughter”
Buell (the mother) and Robin are both models, and they enter with Garry at the start of the show modeling dresses.

Mr. X: “I’m listed in ‘Who’s Who of American Women…My name is Shirley Povich”
Shirley Povich is a sports reporter, columnist and editor for The Washington Post.  He started working for the paper in 1923, and though he would retire in 1973, he continued to write columns until his death in 1998.  Baseball was his sport of choice, and he would contribute to Ken Burns’ landmark documentary series on the subject (1994).  He is the father of TV personality Maury Povich.

Mrs. Joan Trefethen: “I fly an airplane that I built myself…I built it in my house”
The California housewife and mother of three spent $1000 on parts (a third of that on the reconditioned engine) and spent two years building the plane.  (See also E528 )

Special Guest Martha Raye demonstrates (to Henry, mostly) some of the skills required to be a housewife, couched in the idea of how much it would cost to pay for these various services.  Garry claims that if a man paid for all the services provided by a typical American housewife annually, the cost would be in the neighborhood of $30,000 a year, more than $250,000 in today’s dollars.
