Bill, Jayne, Henry, Betsy
Mr. X: “I am Elvis Presley’s grandfather”
Jesse Presley was not particularly
close to his famous grandson, thought they did get together on occasion. Elvis was much closer to his grandmother
Minnie Mae, who moved in with her son Vernon (Elvis’ father) after separating
from Jesse. Minnie Mae eventually lived
with Elvis in Graceland. In an effort to
capitalize on the famous name, Jesse signed a recording contract to perform
folk songs as “Grandpa Jesse Presley.” A
single was released, to little notice.
Jesse performs two songs here (with Garry on drums and Gene Klingman on
guitar), and it’s easy to see why.
Special guest Arlene Dahl leads the
blindfolded panel back onto the stage instead of Kay Lloyd, the staffer usually
assigned to that duty. And that’s her
Secret. The glamorous Dahl was an extremely busy actress throughout the 1950s,
but after the birth of her son Lorenzo Lamas on January 20, 1958, she became
more selective about her onstage and onscreen appearances and focused on other
pursuits, notably a line of beauty products.
Dorothy Fralic of Queens: “I’m going to give Jayne Meadows her
typhoid shot tonight for her European trip…and she doesn’t know it”
Miss Fralic is the head nurse at the
CBS Health Department. The first typhoid
vaccine was introduced in 1896 and by 1958 had become commonplace for overseas
travel. Today, the US and Europe are
mostly free of typhoid fever, though it remains endemic in other parts of the
world. For good measure, Henry and Garry
get their polio shots. The fact that Bill contracted polio at a young age is
not mentioned.
