David Hemmes from Irvington, New York: “I’m
having my 1957 income tax figure out in 22 seconds”
Mr. Hemmes is a mathematician with the
IBM corporation, whose sprawling computer takes up the entire stage. This is the first of many Secrets over the years that demonstrated the show's fascination with computers, which they were fond of calling “electronic brains.” Far removed from the device you're using to read this right now, early computers were massive, rare, and utterly mysterious and mind-boggling to a television audience. All these years later, you probably used a computer to do your income tax this year, didn't you?
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gregg, and children
Walter, Helen and Francis: “Our house was hit by an atom bomb” (In Florence,
S.C.)
What is today known as the Mars Bluff
incident happened on March 11. A B-47
aircraft took off from Savannah, Georgia on its way to England with atomic bombs
on board, and one was accidentally jettisoned.
The bomb was not carrying its nuclear payload, but the explosion of its
conventional TNT destroyed the Gregg home and injured the family. The family received $54,000 in damages from
the Air Force.
Special Guest Douglas Fairbanks Jr
In honor of National Laugh Week, four
finalists in a laughing competition have been enlisted to laugh at all of Fairbanks’
responses. The game also serves as the
finals for the competition, with the best laugher winning the title. The finalists are Artie Roberts, Barney
Martin, [Diane Holliday] and Morris “Moe” Resner. Of that group, Martin would become a successful
character actor in film and television. [See
