Paul Karpiscak from Orlando, Florida: “I fired our ‘Vanguard’
rocket Monday morning”
Karpiscak was the senior rocket
propulsion engineer for the Martin Company, and as such was responsible for
flipping the switch. Unlike the first
two Vanguard attempts (See
E263
), the March 17 launch was a success,
launching the satellite Vanguard I into orbit.
It was the second American satellite after Explorer I, and the fourth
earth satellite in the world behind the first two Sputniks. Though dormant since 1964, Vanguard I remains
in space today, the oldest man-made object still in orbit.
John Tate of Cincinnati: “I shot a bear 14 ½ feet tall”
The stuffed Kodiak bear, which Mr.
Tate shot in Alaska last spring, is wheeled out behind the blindfolded
panelists.
Godfrey has the panel play Arthur Godfrey’s No-Talent Scouts, a
spoof of his long-running contest show.
Jayne sings the Winston jingle in Chinese. Nye does his “Gordon Hathaway” character from
his Steve Allen Show appearances.
Henry mimics Godfrey’s unique laugh.
Carmel Quinn, a popular regular on Godfrey’s shows and a Talent Scouts winner herself in 1955,
performs with Godfrey.
