Bill, Jayne, Henry, Faye

Henry mentions that his New Year’s wish is for Red Skelton to get well.  The popular comic had a near-fatal heart attack on December 31 but would recover.

Hayden Sisters of Ottawa, Canada: “We’re going to have our pigtails cut off tonight”
Sally (17), Judy (16), Michele (14), Christine (9) and Paige (8) are a harmonizing quintet who perform briefly before their game, accompanied by their father, Captain N.C. Hayden.  The girls reveal their attractive shorter hairdos at the end of the program.

Mr. X: “I made a 62-yard run in the Rose Bowl game…But I ran the wrong way” (in 1929)
Roy “Wrong Way” Riegels was an All-American center for the University of California, whose stellar collegiate career was overshadowed by this one mistake.  Riegels recovered a fumble by a Georgia Tech opponent, lost his bearings, and ran the wrong way to the one yard line before being stopped.  The eventual safety that resulted proved to be the difference in Tech’s 8-7 win.  Even today, it is considered by many to be the greatest blunder in the history of college football.  Riegels developed a sense of humor about the incident, and even reached out to other athletes who made similar mistakes ( E581 ).

Special Guest Tyrone Power
With the panel blindfolded, Power imitates all of Garry’s actions, designed to make himself look like a bigger Hollywood star.  Power and Faye are about to begin a 40-city tour with the George Bernard Shaw play Back to Methuselah.  Faye is given an elaborate sendoff.  Though Garry promises she would return to the panel at the end of her run, when the play closed on Broadway in April, Faye did not return.  She would make occasional visits to the show over the next couple of years.
