Mrs. X: “My husband won the Middleweight
Championship of the World this week”
Carmen Basilio defeated Sugar Ray Robinson on September 23 at
Yankee Stadium to win the title. He would
only hold the championship for a few months, however. Robinson would defeat him in a rematch on March
25, 1958 in Chicago. Earlier in his
career, Basilio also held the welterweight title. Basilio would compile a respectable
56-16-7 record in a career that ran from 1948 to 1961.
Mrs Allen McGaughy from Sacramento, California: “I’m going to play music
on old cans of beer”
Vera McGaughy calls the contraption, which her husband built, a "beer can calliope." In addition to the cans, it consists of an organ keyboard, copper tubing and two vacuum cleaners that supply the power. Allen would continued to perform and show off his contraption, both with Vera and with their daughter Gae Coughlin, deep into the 1970s.
Special Guest Reginald Gardiner
Gardiner creates a London fog onstage. He is about to appear in The Story of
Mankind (1957) in which he plays William Shakespeare. The film, an unusual assemblage of stock
footage mixed with brief performances from dozens of big stars as historical figures, is an
early screen credit for director Irwin Allen, who would later become famous for
his all-star disaster films such as The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and The
Towering Inferno (1974).
