218     January 9, 1957
Bill, Jayne, Henry, Faye

Henry has 1500 letters with job offers after an offhand remark he made on last week’s show about finding some kind of “clean work” other than television.

Frances Haskett: “I taught Grace Kelly how to change diapers”
Miss Haskett is the Director of Nursing Services for the New York Red Cross.  Kelly, the former movie star whose fairy tale romance and wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 had captured the public imagination, was pregnant with their first child.  Princess Caroline would be born on January 23.

Special Guest Joe E Brown: “I’m inhaling helium”
Today, the idea that helium makes your voice sound higher is well known, but it was still something of a novelty in 1957 when helium was still fairly rare and expensive to produce.  Brown is also inhaling the helium directly from a pressurized tank, which today is considered somewhat dangerous.  The panel tries to do dramatic readings after taking their own hits from the tank.

Surprise Special Guest Jackie Robinson
Robinson, at age 38, had just announced his retirement from baseball in that week’s Look Magazine.  He announced in that article that he was taking an executive position with the Chock Full o’Nuts coffee company. Rather than playing a Secret, Robinson simply answers questions from the studio audience, some of whom were unhappy that Robinson had left the game.  After last season, the Dodgers had traded Robinson to the rival New York Giants without knowing of his plans to retire.  Giants fans had been looking forward to having Robinson on their team, and many of them felt abandoned by the retirement announcement.
