George Smith from
Los Angeles: “I made a parachute jump at supersonic speed”
Smith, a
civilian test pilot, was flying a new Super Sabre jet last February when it
began to nosedive at a speed faster than sound.
He is the first pilot to survive such a bailout. The multiple injuries he sustained from the
sudden deceleration, estimated at 40G, left him hospitalized for six months. Six days after this appearance, Smith would
fly a Super Sabre once again.
Special Guest
Cyril Ritchard answers each question using a range of emotions from A to Z (A=Anger, etc).
Ritchard is an
Australian stage actor best known for playing Captain Hook on Broadway and on
television in productions of Peter Pan. The original 1954 Broadway production led to
a wildly successful live NBC television broadcast on March 7, 1955. A second live NBC broadcast featuring the
same cast aired on January 9, just two days before this appearance. Ritchard and Mary Martin (who played Peter)
would revisit their roles for television one more time in 1960. That final production was the only one
videotaped in color, and would be the version frequently replayed in subsequent
decades.
[Rachel Palmer]:
“I kissed Bill Cullen three weeks ago on this program”
On that
episode (
E166
), Bill tried to cajole the audience into various emotional
reactions. In the end, Palmer appears to
be overcome with emotion and runs up on stage to kiss him. Given that Bill is hardly a sex symbol, the
segment was almost certainly staged.
