Gene Pollar: "I played Tarzan in the movies in 1919"
New York firefighter Joseph Pohler starred in The Revenge of
Tarzan (actually a 1920 release) under the stage name of Gene Pollar. He was the second man to star in a Tarzan
film, following in the jungle footsteps of Elmo Lincoln. The silent film was his only screen credit. When contractual issues kept him from a second appearance in the loincloth, Pohler quit show business and returned to firefighting. After the game, we meet Gordon Scott, the newest film Tarzan. Tarzan’s Hidden Jungle (1955) is
hitting New York theaters this very day and would be the first of six films
starring Scott as the jungle king.
Scott’s next film in the series, Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957), would be the first Tarzan film in color. (Also see

Mrs. Katherine Bilson from Columbus, Ohio: “I used to
diaper Bill Cullen”
As seen on the fourth anniversary show (
E192
). Mrs. Bilson is not in the studio but is
instead piped through on a speaker. She had suffered a back injury and was laid up in bed in her Columbus home. Coincidentally, this same setup had been used
earlier, and that secret also related to Bill’s early years (
E27
).
Special guest Dave Garroway: "We're going home"
By which he means he (and Garry too) will slowly leave the studio while the panelists ask their questions. A camera eventually follows him and Garry out the back door, leaving the panelists alone in the studio. Garroway is host of NBC's Today program (1952-present), a role he originated and would have until resigning in 1961. Friendly and sunny on air, his demeanor hid a lifelong battle with depression. That battle would be in part the reason for his 1961 resignation, and for his death by suicide in 1982 at age 69.
