Film Tarzans Gene Pollar and
Gordon Scott
New York firefighter Joseph Pohler starred in The Revenge of
Tarzan (1920) under the stage name of Gene Pollar. He was the second man to star in a Tarzan
film, following in the jungle footsteps of Elmo Lincoln. The silent film was his only screen credit. When contractual issues kept him from a second appearance in the loincloth, Pohler quit show business and returned to firefighting. Gordon Scott is the newest film Tarzan. Tarzan’s Hidden Jungle (1955) is
hitting New York theaters this very day and would be the first of six films
starring Scott as the jungle king.
Scott’s next film in the series, Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957), would be the first Tarzan film in color. (Also see
