Special Guest Mel Torme: "I'm drawing a
moustache
on a photograph of Frank Sinatra"
Torme was a popular and talented vocalist who nevertheless toiled (as so many singers of the period did) in the shadow of Sinatra. In the fifties, Torme's career as a popular artist waned as he focused on modern jazz, while Sinatra's skyrocketed with recordings of pop hits. Still, Torme was never completely off the pop culture radar, and would find a new generation of fans with gently self-effacing appearances on the sitcom Night Court (1984-1992). As most trivia fans know, Torme wrote the music and cowrote the lyrics for the 1945 holiday standard "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire").
