[Mary Parito] of The Bronx: “I paid for my own
marriage license”
Barely wacky matrimony. The couple arrived at the courthouse and the
husband-to-be forgot his wallet, so the soon-to-be Mrs. Parito pulled two
dollars out of her purse and paid for the license. This was considered noteworthy enough to be
featured on national television.
Mrs. Harry Hoyt of South Orange, NJ: “My
husband is the sponsor of this show.”
Henry “Harry” Hoyt was the president
of Carter Products, makers of not only Arrid Deodorant but Carter’s Little
Liver Pills, which were also advertised on the show. Later in the decade, the company dropped
“Liver” from the name of the pills after FTC intervention and reformulated the
product as a laxative. Both Arrid Cream
Deodorant and the laxative version of Carter’s Little Pills can be found on the
market today.
Special Guest Melvyn Douglas: “I just became a
grandfather”
Over the course of a long career on
stage and screen that would eventually earn him two Academy Awards, Douglas
moved from the suave leading man (notably opposite Gretta Garbo in 1939’s Ninotchka) to mature, fatherly roles,
including his award-winning parts in Hud and Being There. He was married to Helen Gahagan Douglas, a
one-time actress who entered politics and became a US congresswoman. While
Douglas does have a famous granddaughter, actress Illeana Douglas, she is not the
grandchild of this Secret.
[Mildred Dolan] of Whitestone, Queens: “My father went to school with
Eddie Bracken”
George Dolan appears at the end of the abbreviated
game to shake hands with Bracken.
