A sextet of Salvation Army band members
out on the sidewalk tell us that it’s time for the annual Christmas program,
though the segments have little to do with the holiday.
Jeffrey Marlowe from Philadelphia is an accomplished concert
pianist whose impressive credits are recited by Steve: “All these facts are
also true about my twin brother”
Jeffrey and
Ronald are former child prodigies who perform together as (naturally) the
Marlowe Brothers. They would tour
together for decades, making appearances with symphony orchestras and on
television variety programs and performing everything from classical works to
Beatles tunes.
Cathie Radin (5 ½) from Palos Verdes Peninsula, California: “My
voice is used for talking dolls”
Young Cathie’s
recorded voice can be heard in three dolls manufactured by Mattel: Baby Cheryl,
Baby Secret and Baby Teenietalk. Cathie
is the daughter of a Mattel design director.
Chatty Cathy, Mattel’s original talking doll, was first released in 1959
and had her voice provided by legendary cartoon actress June Foray. The sixties
dolls are collectable items today, especially the ones that still work.
Five members of the Salvation Army Band that opened the show:
“There were 6 of us playing at the stage door…The sixth girl was Bess Myerson
(playing the tuba)”
The opening
segment in the cold New York evening was prerecorded a little earlier than the
rest of the show so that Bess could perform, unnoticed, then change and join
the panel. The sextet (including Bess) performs several holiday carols, joined eventually
by a larger Salvation Army ensemble.
