Nancy Powers from New York City: “I play trombone on stage in a
Broadway show”
Powers works
for an advertising agency during the day, and at night she is one of the
four-woman “Kit Kat Band” in the new Broadway musical Cabaret (1966-1969). Cabaret officially opened on November 20
and would become a smash hit, winning seven Tony Awards. The 1972 film version would be equally
hailed, winning eight Oscars. Powers
would continue to play the trombone throughout her life, including two
additional Broadway credits. In 2005,
she would self-publish a CD of her music.
Here, she is joined by the other members of the Kit Kat Band (Maryann
Burns, piano; Janice Mink, saxophone; Viola Smith, drums) for a performance of
the title song. All four artists are featured on the original cast recording.
[Esther Weinberg] from Hollywood, Florida: “I was dealt a perfect
bridge hand…I lost”
Mrs.
Weinberg’s hand was all clubs, the lowest suit in bridge. The other three players had twelve of a
kind. For a completely perfect deal
across the board, see
E523
from 1963.
Special guest Bud Collyer had each of the
panelists prepare four statements, two true and two false. They each read their statements and the other
three guess which are which. Among the
more unusual true statements: Betsy was once investigated by the police, Bill
supervised 500 chickens, Bess ran a steamboat aground on the Mississippi River
and Henry was a “senior life saver” for the Red Cross when he was eleven years
old. After some time apart on the CBS
schedule, Collyer’s To Tell the Truth will rejoin I’ve Got a Secret on the
Monday night lineup beginning next week.
